about capacitar
Capacitar means “to empower” in Spanish. Capacitar’s mission is to teach body-mind-spirit practices to empower healing, wholeness and peace, both in the individual and in the world.
Capacitar is: A flow of body-based exercises and meditation techniques T'ai Chi, Emotional Freedom Technique, finger holds and more With regular use in daily life, these practices can help alleviate stress and equip us to live with, and beyond, trauma in the here and now |
Capacitar Practices are not therapy but rather a flow of body based exercises, meditations and protocols which are appropriate and adaptable to all cultures, age groups and physical abilities. Each person finds their own core practice(s).
For one person it will be regular T'ai Chi, to move the body and balance energy and emotions. For another it will be daily use of meditation, the finger-holds, or the Emotional Freedom Technique to clear and balance strong emotions. Pressing or rubbing a few simple acupressure points can relieve physical and emotional pain. We find ourselves growing in deeper appreciation of each technique and how they can help us at different times in our lives. These simple but powerful practices, as well as many others, also become a great gift to pass on to others. Find out more about our Taster Days and Training Courses here. |

A personal note from my experience : “Like with all things that do us good, we will let the practices slide or neglect them (sometimes for several weeks ) but as I return to the well of goodness that are Capacitar practices, the benefit is felt and appreciated again and life is fuller and richer and I wonder 'Why did I ever let my daily practice slide?” Paul Golightly
how it all began
Capacitar's Founder - Dr Patricia Mathes Cane
Capacitar began in 1988 during the war in Nicaragua when founder Pat Cane was invited to work on an art festival in the barrios of Managua. To survive the stress of her work, Pat practiced Tai Chi and acupressure for self-care. Nicaraguan colleagues commented: “Your art is great, but teach us what you do to care for yourself.” The people intuitively recognized the value of ancient wellness practices to deal with the violence and trauma of their lives. With this insight Capacitar was born. From Nicaraguans came the word “capacitar”—a Spanish verb meaning to empower, to encourage, to bring to life—that became the name of the organization and the spirit of a movement. And from a grassroots centre in Managua came the inspiration for the method of popular education. |
Pat Cane and the UK
We have been privileged in the UK to have had Pat Cane, the founder of Capacitar, come to the UK Mainland to lead training courses since 2006. The initial course was held in London; then she headed north in 2008 to train the first group in Scotland. Pat also runs an annual retreat at Noddfa Retreat Centre in Wales.
Capacitar has grown and multiplied in the UK in so many ways and places. The 'Field’ of its healing work continues to expand as a result of those who have taken up the way of popular education to draw others into its healing circle.
